Car insurance is not a favorite way to spend our hard earned money. It is tempting to forego the more expensive car insurance plans in favor of a lower premium payment. After all, how often do you really use your coverage? For some people, opting for a cheaper insurance premium is a viable option. Others may want to spend the extra money on the higher insurance premiums in favor of more protection. The question then becomes who is a good candidate to opt for less insurance coverage and who should not.

There are certain vital factors to consider before deciding if you should elect less coverage in favor a lower premium payment. Geographical location is one of those factors. Enviromental conditions in the area you reside often determine your auto insurance premiums; and for good reason. People that live in areas often hit by hurricanes pay higher insurance rates.

In 2005, auto insurance companies paid out money in the billions to automobile owners placing claims due to hurricane damage. If you live in one of these areas, do you really want to risk being uninsured or under insured? Being stuck with the high cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle out of pocket is a much bigger financial hit to take. Making monthly payments will seem like a luxury compared to the large bill you will have to cover out of pocket and all at once.

Deciding to protect your vehicle by purchasing a higher insurance coverage plan doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to pay outrageous premiums. Even though areas that are more prone to dangerous weather conditions do have higher auto insurance premium rates doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shop around. You can and should still shop around for the best rate you can find. There are many websites that allow you to enter your information and have several companies compete for your business. You may not end up with the cheapest available auto insurance rates, but you’ll have more protection and peace of mind for the best price you can find.

Liability insurance encompasses the minimum amount of auto insurance coverage you are required to carry by law. Liability insurance only covers injuries and property damage to those outside of your vehicle if you caused an accident. Liability insurance does not cover your vehicle or any individuals, including you, inside your vehicle at the time of an accident. The minimum amount of coverage you are required to carry legally is determined by your state of residence.

Liability insurance coverage is usually assigned in three parts; the maximum payment amount for personal injury that will be issued to a single individual, the maximum amount of payment that will be issued for personal injury in total for the accident, and the total payment amount that will be paid for property damage. The minimum liability coverage amounts assigned by the state are what is required for you to drive your car legally. If you choose to only insure yourself for the minimum and the damages and injury incurred during the accident exceed the insured amount, you will be responsible for paying the remainder out of pocket.

It is important to protect your financial future. If you cause an accident and do not have enough insurance to cover all of the expenses, the injured party can pursue payment from you. You may want to consider insuring yourself above the legal minimum in your state. Although the insurance rates may be slightly higher, it could be worth the peace of mind. Ask your insurance company what the rates would be if you chose higher coverage amounts. The rate difference may not be too significant.

All car insurance quotes are not created equal. It is common knowledge that many personal factors are considered by auto insurance companies when giving you a rate quote. Some of the factors are common sense: Have you been in any accidents? How many and how often? What is your driving record? These factors would speak to the risk you pose for the car insurance companies. And most of these we accept without complaint. But why does the type of car you drive affect your car insurance rates?

There are many important factors auto insurance companies consider. The auto insurance company considers the sticker price of your vehicle and the replacement value of the car. The insurance companies also take into consideration how well your vehicle withstands an accident and the cost to repair your vehicle in the event it is in an accident. Safety features are also considered when determining your auto insurance rate. Each of these factors tells an auto insurance company how expensive a claim would be if it were filed on your vehicle. And the more expensive the claim, the higher your auto insurance rates will be.

The most expensive cars to insure are those vehicles that have high claim rates in the event of an accident and those vehicles that are generally driven at higher rates of speed. Vehicles that drivers usually like to speed in are at a higher risk for a collision. The cars that fall into this high risk category are four wheel drive trucks, high performance vehicles, luxury cars, and (not surprisingly) sports cars. The cars with the highest theft rate are also quoted at higher insurance rates. These are factors you may want to take into consideration when purchasing a vehicle if lower insurance rates are important for your budget.

The first rule of car insurance shopping is call around to as many insurance companies as you possible can. There are numerous insurance companies and brokers that offer a variety of services and prices for auto insurance. Many companies offer similar standard protections. But you may find that the prices can vary substantially for virtually the same services. And with the fluctuating economy, every dime and nickel is needed.

You can obtain quotes from insurance companies either by phone or internet. But shopping on line for an auto insurance quote offers you freedom from pushy sales people and the opportunity to get a large number of quotes in a short period of time. You also have the advantage of obtaining all of the information in writing. This makes it easier to compare and sometimes easier to understand exactly what you are being offered in the quote.

Auto insurance quotes obtained from the phone gives you the opportunity to get a feel for the company you are dealing with. It is easier to get a sense of the companies customer service when you are speaking directly with them. If the insurance agent you are talking to tells you to expect a call later in the day with all of the figures, but doesn’t call back for a few days, this could be indicative of how valuable they consider your time. If an insurance agent tells you to expect a return call in fifteen minutes and returns the call in ten minutes, this company sticks to it’s word and considers your time important.

There are enough auto insurance companies out there to make shopping around a vital part of car insurance shopping. If you don’t call around, you could cost yourself hundred of dollars more each year on insurance. You may also miss the opportunity to consider which company values your business the most. Make the auto insurance companies compete for your business and get the most value for your money.
